Airplane James is a special artist. While most other rappers embellish, exaggerate and straight up lie about what they have, where they are or what they do, ‘Plane remains humble, honest and still incredibly dope on records. His latest video to “Fiend” was the revealing outro to his recently release project “Who TF Is Airplane James”. In this song he describes his current situation in life, as he is unemployed, a young father, struggling to make rap money, then lethargically attempts a hook rapping about the exact opposite, because that’s what the rap fans are feening for. This scenario is all too familiar to many, in this fake-it-til-you-make-it world we live in, and was ingenious of Airplane to make a song about this.
The Goldby7 visual, was spot on with the depiction of the strong messaging in “Fiend”. Airplane wanders around the video shoot with a despondent look on his face as his friends flash money fans and guns into the camera. His video shoot is interrupted by a text from his baby’s mother to get some diapers. The camera follows him through the store as he buys them. He continues to shoot the video after, but he’s handed his daughter right in the middle of the second scene and his real life responsibilities interrupt once again, but he’s finally grinning from ear to ear as he holds his daughter.
