The greatest part about Hip-Hop to me is that it’s always been regional. Even during the age of the internet, you can always get a sense of where someone is from by their choice of production, or their accents. With that capability comes a slew of authentic and area-specific music that helps define the characteristics of that region. Joining forces with fellow North Carolina rapper David Lewis, rising artist Paragon Don turns in his dope new single, “Had to Do it.”
Immediately kicked off with a soul sample loop, the production from Snacman is what instantly snatches me in. Utilizing the first 15 seconds to build up anticipation, they do a great job at setting the tone before Paragon comes in and delivers an impressive, lengthy verse. Passing to Lewis with no hook, the two display a keen sense of comradery and chemistry over the production, never missing a hitch and staying relatively on brand with the same subject matters. Bring those things all together, and you have an charming ode to North Carolina done by two of it’s most loyal sons.
