Polo G Shows No Sign of Sophomore Slump on ‘The Goat’

While Michael Jordan will forever be the goat in Chicago, as illustrated in the recently aired ESPN Documentary “The Last Dance”, a new goat is emerging in the windy city. Polo G has shot to the top of the hierarchy in hip-hop as one of the best new artists over the past year and a half. Tracks like “Finer Things” & “Battle Cry” were breakout hits for the 21-year old. However, the one track that really took Polo G’s name to the mainstream audience was, “Pop Out” featuring Lil Tjay that reached number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Last year, Polo G released his debut project, ‘Die a Legend’, which received high praise. Over the past year, the Columbia Records artist has become one of the most popular rappers to work with. On his 2020 single, “Go Stupid” featuring Stunna 4 Vegas & NLE Choppa, Polo warned us for better music, with the line, “I’m just focused on music, they say my last tape was a classic, but I got some hotter shit”. His new album is simply titled, ‘The Goat’.

‘The Goat’ boasts 16 tracks, with three of them being official singles; “Heartless” produced by Mustard, the Mike WiLL Made-it & Tay Keith produced “Go Stupid” featuring Stunna 4 Vegas and NLE Choppa, and the WayneOnABeat produced “DND”. Other credited beat makers include Callari, Hagan, Hit-Boy, and The Superiors plus more. Other than the singles, Polo remained conservative when it came to features. 13 original songs, and only three of them feature another artist. On “Flex ”, the late Juice WRLD has a verse, and the two artists both reflect on their lives before fame, but also displaying showboating bars. The song seemed like the two recorded this together, and it felt natural. Lil Baby hopped on the eleventh track titled, “Be Something”. BJ The Chicago Kid sings the chorus on the final track on the album titled, “Wishing For a Hero”. On tracks like “Martin & Gina”, “33” (named after Scottie Pippen’s number), and “Beautiful Pain (Losing My Mind)” Polo touches on relationships with girls, his opioid addictions, and losing friends to gun violence.

Polo G is a rising star in hip-hop. There is noticeable growth from his first project to his sophomore effort. However, if Polo is a true goat, the leap from his second project to his third will be comparable to Jordan’s from the free-throw line and the rest will be history. ‘The Goat’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
