Naturally, I’m a huge fan of sequels. I know they say that sequels can often ruin the integrity of their predecessors, but I could care less. I love when a good story gets to be continued, but one area I can agree that sequels normally fall short is in music. Countless times we’ve seen rappers try to do a part 2 to a popular album years later, and it just doesn’t hit the same. For Houston native, J. Horne, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Serving as the 4th installment in his ongoing series, he drops off his engaging project, Homesick 4.
Clocking in at 12-tracks, Homesick 4 is lengthy, but every minute has its’ purpose. Utilizing a handful of aggressively charged and melodically driven trap beats, Horne raps about various topics such as motivation, struggle and ultimately perseverance. On standout tracks like, “Concentrate,” he tries to do some teaching, giving words of wisdom, while on songs like, “Feeling Great,” he describes how life can feel if you adhere to the aforementioned advice. With only a handful of guest appearances that mostly land on one track, it’s definitely encouraging to hear a rising artist keep us engaged for 45-minutes on their own.
