The Pulitzer organization announced its awards for journalism, arts, and letters today in New York, and the biggest surprise came from the music category where none other than Compton’s own, Kendrick Lamar, set history by becoming the first hip-hop artist to win that award for his album DAMN. The award has usually gone to classical works in the past, but this marks a big shift in the award. The Pulitzer website states that DAMN. is “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.” Once again, we see that Kendrick is paving the way in music and he is not even close to finishing any time soon. Celebrate Kenny’s win by listening to DAMN. again below.
