First off rest in peace Pimp C! On this day in 2007 Sweet Jones tragically passed away. I remember it very clearly, I was a fan of Chad then, but since I’ve been able to go back and listen to early UGK albums he’s one of my all time favorites.
Today, Mass Appeal Records has released a posthumous album titled Long Live The Pimp, by Pimp C, which is surprisingly very solid! I typically don’t have high expectations for posthumous albums, because you never know who is involved in the album making process, and you always wonder if the deceased musicians would have collaborated with certain artists who are featured on the project (I’m looking at you, whoever put Tyga and 2Pac on a song together), but in my opinion they kept this album very trill, like Pimp would have wanted. I was glad to see a minimum amount of new artists on the album. Besides A$AP Rocky, who always pays homage to the late pimp, Ty Dolla $ign was a pleasant surprise, they possibly would have collaborated and then you have the usual suspects like Juicy J and Bun B who are all over this, Lil Wayne, 8 Ball & MJG, Nas, Slim Thug and Lil KeKe also made solid contributions. I was a bit upset Houston/New Orleans rapper Le$ wasn’t featured on the album, because I feel like he is the closest thing we have to a young Pimp C in rap right now, but I digress. This is a good album with what appears to be good replay value at the moment because there are songs like “3 Way Freak”, “Ain’t Said Shit”, ” Wavybone”, “Pay Day”, “Bitch Get Down” “Friends” I know I will be playing over and over again in the next few weeks.
The people behind Long Live The Pimp really held it down for Pimp Sqaud baby!
